Every believer who keeps fasting during the month of Ramadan pays some charity at the end of the month to purify the sawms he performed at a fixed rate. Fakihs(Islamic Scholars) call it Fitra. In different hadiths, Fitra has been also termed as Sadakatul fitr, zakatul fitr, zakate Ramadan, Zakate Abdan ( Zakat for the body), Zakatus Sawm and Sadakatur rous ( Awnul Bari Part4 -Page 97)

Rules of Fitra

According to Sihah Sitta, Bayhaki and Tahavir, fitra is Wajib (Obligatory) for every man and woman irrespective of poor or rich. The hadith didn’t clearly exclude anyone from fitra. It is the tool of purifying the sawms. If not paid the sawms will be impured. So, naturally, the question arises how the person with least capacity will pay fitra. According to Abu Daud, Darakutni and Bayhaki, Allah will return many more if the poor pay fitra. That is why; he allowed them to receive fitra from others.

Who must Pay Fitra

Fitra to be paid by everyone. Father has to pay the Fitra for adolescent children. Every woman will pay Fitra by herself or by her husband or by her father. Master has to pay the Fitra for servants.

Whom to Pay Fitra

Fitra is given to a needy person who is not able to meet his living expenses for himself and for his dependents for one whole year, nor does he possess the means to earn a livelihood for himself and his dependents.

When to pay Fitra

The Fitra has to be distributed before the Eid-ul-Fitr congregation so that the poor enjoy the day of Eid with others.

Amount of Fitra

This year Fitra has been fixed at a minimum of Tk. 70 per head. Considering the market price of 1.65kg of wheat or flour or 3.3kg of raisin, cheese or barley this year the Fitra per person has been fixed at a minimum of Tk 110 and up to Tk 2,805.
