Worst Food for Heart

Animal Liver, Brain and Bone Marrow

Animal body parts like liver, brain and bone marrow are huge reservoir of cholesterol. Heart patients should avoid dishes like nihari and liver and brain curries.

Shrimp or Prawn

Avoid shrimp/prawn. Though it does not contain much calorie or fat, shrimp/prawn contains a high level of cholesterol. Where a 3.5 ounce piece of salmon contains 62 milligrams of cholesterol, the same amount of shrimp equips its consumers with as much as 189 milligrams of cholesterol.

Fish Head and Roe

Fish head and roe contains LDL or harmful cholesterol and triglyceride that increase the lipid profile in blood.

Fast food

A report of Journal of American Heart Association shows that people who eat fast food once every week, their chances of dying from heart disease is 20% greater than others. People who eat fast food more than once a week, their chances of dying from heart disease are even higher- 50%.

Egg Yolk

Though there is nothing wrong with enjoying some egg white, it is better for heart patients to avoid the egg yolk. That is because egg yolk tends to contain high levels of cholesterol. It has been observed that out of the 186 milligram cholesterol in a large chicken egg, all of it resides in its 'yolk'. And it is advised for a heart patient to not have daily cholesterol intake cross the 200 milligram limit.

Butter

Though butter is a key ingredient in the aristocrat cuisine of east, it contains a good amount of saturated fat. Along with this, palmitic acid is also present in butter which can be a major cause of artery blockages as deduced by Columbia University nutritionist Wahida Kormali. To avoid this, we can use olive oil, sunflower oil or margarine instead.

Coconut

Two studies from Hong Kong and Singapore have shown that rate of death from heart disease is three times more in Singapore than that in Hong Kong. According to researchers, a reason behind this difference is the tendency of Singaporeans to use Coconut and Palm oil in their food. 85% to 90% of coconut oil is saturated fat which is harmful for heart patients.

Deep Fried and Oily Food

The more fried the food, the more it loses its nutrition value- more harmful fat keeps on adding to the food. There have been cases where there were no calorie in the food left after frying the food for far too long.

When you fry meat or any other kind of food in cooking oil, you will see a lot of bubbles. The water inside the food starts to boil. When the food is deep-fried, all water dries up- no more bubbles form. With no more water remaining inside the food, oil starts entering the food. While meat and such food are already rich in saturated fat, adding oil to such food only increases  the net fat content of that food.

Red Meat

Overconsumption of red meat causing heart disease is old news. But that is not only due to the fat and cholesterol. A recent research has shown that as red meat is broken down in the body, a compound called carnitine is produced in the body which releases trimethylamine N-oxide. And this trimethylamine plays a crucial role in causing atherosclerosis or artery blockage.

Cake, pastry, pudding and ice cream

All these food are rich in sugar. Sugar increases the risk of heart attack  in an individual even if he does not look obese. A report from Journal of American Medical Association has stated that the relation between sugar consumption and heart disease is not clear yet. But drinks containing sugar definitely increase blood pressure. They also increase the restlessness of the liver which, as a result, releases harmful fat into the body. And these two occurrences together speed up the process of heart disease getting into effect.
